... where I used to work. These holes lead to basements of shops along the main street. I'm not sure the holes (with steel covers that can open and close) work anymore, or if the shops use or even have the basements.

It just made me think of things unseen and hidden. Things below us,  inside, our thoughts and worries, hopes and wishes. 

And high overhead are the other things unseen - the things of God. 

Of course God is real. Investigate honestly and you'll see.
